BUSIA DISTRICT COUNCIL STUDY VISIT TO BUIKWE AND MAYUGE DISTRICTS

The District Council including some key technocrats set of for a tour visit on 19th March 2023. The team was led by the District chairperson having the first engagement at Njeru Stock Farm in Buikwe District. At the farm, the team was taken through the mandate of National Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC & DB) by the Senior Farm Manager.
Opportunities of the agency were shared with the team and a tour of the site for the team to appreciate all activities being run at the farm. Different breeds of livestock bred at the farm were seen by the team.
The team concluded activities for day 1 of the tour from Mayuge to catch up with day 2 of the visit.

On the morning of 20th March 2024,the team set off for day 2 of the study visit to Mayuge District Local Government and was received by the PAS, Paul Muziransa in the morning.
An interactive session was held with staff and political leadership of the District for members of council to understand and compare council transactions of both districts including exgratia, recruitment and welfare.
This was followed by a field visit to the District Demonstration farm then to the Imanyiro sub county Demonstration garden. Here the team was taken through a two acre model and guided on processes of setting up demo farms including the cost. The team discovered that all Sub Counties had demonstration gardens that were set up using the extension grant that is allocated to Mayuge just like it is given to all districts in Uganda.
The team was later led by the Senior Agricultural Officer of Mayuge District, Emmanuel Kawuzi to Kityerera Presidential farm where the team was taken through a 4 acre model farming. The farm deals in 12 enterprises including vegetables, fruits, aquaculture etc .. and the members were taken through each of them from planting, management and post harvest handling.
The team concluded the tour on the 20th March 2024, rich with experience on two acre and four acre model approaches and intend to use the knowledge in decision making especially relating to agriculture.
